Croatia - Dubrovnik

A short weekend trip to Dubrovnik so we didn’t make it to any vineyards but here’s a quick lowdown of the local wines we tried:

Pošip - a white grape variety, grown traditionally on the island of Korcula, situated on the east coast of the country roughly halfway between Dubrovnik and Split. It produces quite full bodied wines with flavours of zesty apples, lemons and aromas of almond and vanilla.

Malvazija - The Istarska Malvazija grape (aka Malvasia in other countries) produces white wines with stone fruit aromas and flavours of peach and apricot and apple. Usually comes from the Istrian Peninsula, on the northernmost part of the Croatian coastline. It is super versatile and can be produced in a number of different styles.

Plavac Mali - Has the majority of it's plantings along the Dalmatian Coast and is an ancestral relative of Zinfandel (aka Primitivo in Italy) It produces a high alcohol, high tannin wine with flavours of black cherry and notes of pepper, smoke and spice.

Some notable international varieties we tried were some delicious aged Merlot at the d'vino wine bar and a really stunning 2019 Chardonnay at Restaurant 360 by Le Chiffre - coming again from the Istrian peninsula, this wine is all melon, peaches, butter and big oaky led flavours! Made in the Burgundian style and super small production, this was a recommendation from the Sommelier at the restaurant and only a few bottles remained in their cellar after this was quaffed by us- get there quickly if you travelling to Dubrovnik soon!
